As a tallit weaver, I have been trying to find out about the history of the tallit. I wonder if anyone can tell me when the tallit itself, in contrast to the fringes, became sacred. I understand that originally the tallit was just considered a regular garment, usable to carry things, cover beds, etc. Even going to the bathroom was permissible (Orach Chaim 21:3). When and how did the cloth of the tallit become sacred? Many thanks for your help. Alissa
