The Laws of the Holy Sabbath and the six preceding Days…
Aleph:
The Holy Sabbath is a covenant given to us as it is written in Shmot 21:11: "It was during the six week days that HaShem made the Heaven, the Earth, the Sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on Saturday" and this is a foundation of our faith. Our Rabbis said (may they be remembered for a blessing) in the Jerusalem Talmud (Nederim Pey-Vav-Samech, Perek Gimmel): "Consider the Sabbath like all the Mitzvot. All that guard the Sabbath laws—it is as if they carried out the entire Torah." And thus he says in the Book of Ezra (in Nechemiah): "And upon Mount Sinai you descended and spoke with them from Heaven, and you gave them right ordinances and laws of truth, good, statutes, and commandments and your Holy Sabbath you made known to them, by the hand of your servant Moshe".
Alexander’s commentary: The Sabbath is singled out in the above verse along side the commandments (in the same sentence) to show that our Sabbath is a foundation stone of our faith. That is why it gets it’s own mention besides the term commandments (which should have included the Sabbath as well). If we follow the Sabbath, the other Mitvot should follow as well.
Bet:
All who profane (desecrate) the Sabbath in public, he is considered like (as) a goy for all things. If he contacted (or touched) with wine, it (the wine) is forbidden. And baked bread—the law is like that of bread baked by Goyim. And thus the cooking is like the cooking of goyim. And the law is exactly like that of the dwelling places. In Samech-Dialeth in portion Yoreh Deah: And in public, it is the same in the presence of 10 Jews. And it is not exactly like doing the sin in the presence –really, but it is also like he knows he is advertising to them (achrei cn).
Gimmel:
Therefore, from the praise of the prophet Isaiah (56:2) who says: "Fortunate is man who will do this and the person who will hold fast to it, he who keeps the Sabbath from profaning it and guards his hand from evil." And further… and all that guard the Sabbath laws and make it Holy and delight according to his ability (fulfills) the old commentary upon the hands of the Navi: "there is a reward also in this world besides a great hidden reward in the world to come as is said in Isaiah 56:13 (nun-het/ yud-gimmel): "If you restrain your feet because of the Sabbath from performing your affairs on my Holy Day and you call the Sabbath a delight, the Hold of the Lord honored, and you honor it by not doing your wonted ways, by not pursuing your affairs and speaking words then you shall delight with the Lord and I will cause you to ride on the high places of the land and I will nourish you with the heritage of Yaacov your father—for the mouth of the Lord has spoken"
