Welcome to LOJH...
"Learning is retained only through gentleness" (Iggeres HaGra)
LOJH is was a not-for-profit league of families designed to satisfy the growing demand for Orthodox Jewish Homeschooling. Although we are no longer active, the number of requests we receive about this topic is overwhelming. However, we believe the content we have collected on this site (over the years) is still relevant and helpful for many people. That being said, we are in the process of updating all our content for 2009. As we no longer maintain league activities, I highly recommend joining one of the many observant Jewish homeschooling chat groups which appear on yahoo groups. We have listed the top groups in our resources page. We are geared towards those who wish to follow Jewish Law, in accordance with observant, Torah. Thus, we are not geared towards other affiliations, denominations, religions, kofers, minim, messianic or missionary groups.

We originally started homeschooling to increase the amount of time spent with our children. Many of todays "day-schooling" kids have little time to spend with their families. At the same time, we aimed to maintain social & competitive "normality" for our children, which is many times lost (in this type of endeavor). In our view, homeschooling families had the opportunity to spend more time doing hands-on activities in the home and in the community. This is an irreplaceable (as well as educational) thing to have. We soon realized that there were many more benefits to homeschooling (ie: more than just increased family time).

Some families start homeschooling due to budgetary restraints. Although we realized (early on) that homeschooling can also run up a bill if not done wisely. It depends on the situation. Some homeschool because they truly believe in the philosophy behind homeschooling--as we did. Some join up for a combination of reasons. Some do it temporarily, while others sign on for the long haul. Please click on REASONS for more about why we (and others) started to homeschool. Whatever the case may be, LOJH's goal was to support fellow homeschoolers and educators along the way. We understand how challenging it can seem for Jewish families to find the right resources & activities. To understand more about what homeschooling is and is not... click here .

Networking with fellow homeschoolers or creating a new lesson-plan can be a challenge without the right support system. Finding and accessing quality products and people (for planning or socialization) can be difficult without the right support. However, we are happy to say that the specific tools you require are out there-- waiting for you to find them. LOJH tried to make this whole process much easier. LOJH felts that a good homeschooling league should be flexible to suit the needs of each individual family. We wanted to help you find the resources you need for an effective, committed, and customized homeschooling program.

Some people are hesitant to the idea of Homeschooling. How freakish. Why in the world would anyone attempt it? It can seem like a scary proposition. But if you really do your "homework" (pun intended), you will find that most of the challenges presented by (dsimissive) skeptics are unfounded. LOJH granted all the rights and privileges equally to all its members. It did not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, color, national or ethnic origin in the administration of educational policies and programs. Now that we are no longer functioning, I would think that future groups would do the same. In terms of what "types of Jews" join whatever league you decide to create, there is so much to learn from each other. For us, the line was Jewish Law (which we required). Beyond that, we were open to all interpretations of Jewish Law - as they fell along cultural and traditional boundaries. In other words, we had no problems with MizraHi, Temani, Ashkenazi or Sepharadi kids mixiing into the group. In fact, that was part of the learning process which (in my humble opinion) gave us a huge edge over many schools, which usually fall into one grouping, that totally ignores the rest of the Jewish experience.
